Members of the Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter of TOS held the annual Carter County Summer Bird Count on Saturday, 9 June 2007. This was the 14th running of the count since its inception in 1992; no counts were done in 1997 or 2002. This year 16 observers in 5 parties found 111 species, which is right on the average of the previous 13 years (111.2 species, range 105 - 117). There have been 144 species found cumulatively and 81 species have been recorded on each count. Unusual species: Am. Wigeon - 1 drake (new to count; non-breeder) Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 (5th year on count, all in last 7 years) Eur. Collared-Dove - 1 (new to count) Bank Swallow - 2 (singles by separate parties, 3rd year on count, non-breeder) Comments on other species: N. Loggerhead Shrike - has yet to be found on this count. Com. Raven - 11 found by 4 parties; 2nd highest tally on this count. Tree Swallow - steady increase since first recorded on this count in 1993. Cliff Swallow - steady increase since first recorded on this count in 1996. warblers - 18 species (26 spp. have been found cumulatively). Golden-wg. Warbler - 5 Black-thr. Blue Warbler - 42 Pine Siskin - 18; has occurred every year except 1993. Observers: 1) Bryan Stevens, Reece Jamerson, Brookie & Jean Potter. 2) Tom McNeil, Kim Stroud, Joe McGuiness. 3) Don Holt, Dianne Draper. 4) Rob Biller, David Kirschke. 5) Rick Knight, Gil Derouen, Jim & Darla Anderson, Mary Anna Wheat. Thanks to all for a good count. Note: This count, which seems to be unique in Tennessee, is conducted similarly to Spring, Fall, and Christmas Bird Counts. The area of coverage is limited to one county. The purpose of the Summer Count is to provide a baseline of data for the breeding season and to involve more people than usually participate in the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) or other standardized summer bird studies.
