February 20, 2006 Looking for birds brought in by the weekend's cold front, I spent about two and a half hours today in western Greene County. At dusk I added another half hour in the Tusculum area. There was a lot of activity, including several species not regularly seen in the county. Here's a partial list of the day's birds: Canada Goose (27); Wood Duck (8); Gadwall (13); American Wigeon (4); Mallard (47); Northern Shoveler (5 on Gravel Woods Road (Midway community)); Northern Pintail (2); Green-winged Teal (15 on Gravel Woods Road); Canvasback (2 at Wal-Mart Distribution Center); Redhead (2 on Gravel Woods Road); Ring-necked Duck (6 on Gravel Woods Road); Wild Turkey (21); Great Blue Heron (2); Black Vulture (32); Turkey Vulture (33); Northern Harrier (4); Sharp-shinned Hawk; Cooper's Hawk (2); Red-tailed Hawk (6); American Kestrel (6); American Coot (2); Killdeer (13); Wilson's Snipe; American Woodcock (2 at intersection of Holly Creek Road and Brown's Bridge Road (near Tusculum)); Eurasian Collared-Dove (adjacent to West Greene High School); Red-headed Woodpecker (2 on Green Road 0.3 mile from Highway 348); Eastern Phoebe; American Robin (176); American Pipit; Cedar Waxwing; Yellow-rumped Warbler; Swamp Sparrow (2); White-throated Sparrow (13); White-crowned Sparrow (6); Eastern Meadowlark (15); Rusty Blackbird (42+); Common Grackle (5000+).
