There was at least one continuing Iceland Gull working at the dump on Mt.
Carmel Road this forenoon, apparently the Thayer’s type that we first had
there last week. We saw the bird on the ground around 11 a.m. in bad heat
shimmer, then much better looks both in flight and on the ground at 12:30
p.m.
Also good numbers of Lesser Black-backed Gulls continuing, with 12 adults
(or near adult) and two each first cycle and second cycle type for a new
State high count of 16 birds all seen in a single scan of the group around
noon.
We didn’t see any sign of the possible Mew Gull that may have been seen
here recently, but viewing conditions really weren’t good enough to have a
good chance at finding it.
Viewing here is from the Roadside only and you have to look through the
fence. On a sunny day the lighting is really bad in the morning up until
nearly noon. Cloudy weather is best.
Hopefully we’ll be able to nail down something good here soon with a new
wave of birds coming in from the Great Lakes!
