This afternoon I went to Nickajack Dam to look for terns. I saw one Caspian Tern. While observing gulls on the locks at the dam, I immediately noticed one with a darker mantle. It was larger than the Ring-billed Gulls and had a dark eye. The gull was not dark enough to be Lesser Black-backed. The head almost appeared to have a gray hood because of gray mottling on the crown and nape. There was also some gray on the upper breast. It was a third year California gull with dark primaries, dark tail, and white tertial crescents.. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera. Hopefully it will still be there tomorrow. Two Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were foraging near Shell Mound. A raft of 32 Common Loons were near the dam. One Horned Grebe was present with mostly winter plumage. Two Osprey were nesting about 3 feet off the water on boulders present for channel markers.
