Davidson Co.
2011 March 19

Yesterday, as I was preparing the evening meal, my wife
Bonnie was out behind our house when she heard numerous crows
calling from the front. Walking around to investigate, she
found nine crows surrounding a tree next to the sidewalk
in front of our house. When she opened the front door I
could hear a continuing calamitous crow cacophony. Something
was definitely up. After a few more seconds, the object of
their "affection" flew out of a tree. By the time I arrived
with binoculars in hand, the commotion had moved down
the sidewalk to other trees. I followed but could not get
a good look at the action before the hubbub site once again
shifted, this time to a more extensive set of trees. Eventually
I saw a BARRED OWL fly away with all the crows in hot
pursuit. During this latest chase, one of the audacious
crows counted coup on the owl, pulling out one of its feathers.
Learning the identity of the bird in question, I finally gave up
the chase, but in the distance, as the owl once again settled
on a tree limb, the crows still surrounding and harassing it.
