The Cades Cove Christmas Bird Count was held December 31, 2010. Fifteen observers participated in seven parties. Sixty-three species were recorded which is the average for this count. The weather was partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from from the mid 40s to 60 degrees. It was quite windy with the wind blowing steadily from the southwest, occasionally gusting to 25 mph. The most unusual observation of the count were a lone Red-headed Woodpecker seen in Cades Cove. High numbers of Canada Geese, Blue Jays, Northern Mockingbirds and Starlings were seen. Eastern Meadowlarks and Wild Turkeys were scarce possibly due to the ten inches of snow which blanketed the area on December 26 and remained until the 30th. No Pied-billed Grebes, Ruffed Grouse, or Red Crossbills were recorded. Thanks to everyone who participated!
