The Cades Cove CBC was held on Saturday, December 29, 2012. A cold rain fell intermittently through the morning changing to light sleet in the afternoon. Despite these conditions, 11 observers in 5 parties and 2 feeder watchers participated in the count. Highlights of the count were 15 SANDHILL CRANES seen flying toward Cades Cove, 5 REDHEADS at the sewage ponds in Cades Cove, a SHORT-EARED OWL flushed from a burned field near Sparks Lane in Cades Cove, and 18 RED CROSSBILLs seen in Abram's Creek Campground. The Redheads and Short-eared Owl were new species for this count. A total of 60 species were seen which is close to average for this count. Numbers were low for many species reflecting the weather and lack of hiking parties. A high count of American Crows and Common Grackles (one flock) were recorded. Notable misses were Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Hairy Woodpeckers, and surprisingly Pine Siskins. Thanks to everyone for counting despite the weather!
