Today was a beautiful day at Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountains National Park with rime ice on trees at higher elevations and heavy frost in the Cove. The recent weather change brought changes to the birds at the sewerage ponds. On Tuesday there were 16 Bufflehead, 2 Hooded mergansers, 1 mallard and 1 Wood duck while today there were 31 Canada geese, 33 Bufflehead, 1 Hooded merganser, 1 Gadwall, 4 American Black ducks, 6 Mallards, 1 Ring-necked duck, and 2 Wood ducks. A total of 35 species were observed including a Brown thrasher, 2 Red-shouldered hawks, 1 Northern harrier, 1 Cooper's hawk and a Red-tailed hawk.
