The Chattanooga Chapter of The Tennessee Ornithological Society, Welcomes visitors to its monthly meetings This month's meeting will be held Thur. January 11 at 7:00 pm January program will include: Study Skin Challenge, Sparrow etc.; Test your bird identification skill by trying to ID a variety of preserved specimens from the UTC collection. This month's group of birds will focus on sparrows and sparrow-like species. Take this opportunity to get a thorough, "up close" look at some the little brown birds that frequent our winter woods and fields Bird of the Month, American Kestrel: Dr. David Aborn, UTC Ornithologist, will give a short talk on our smallest and most abundant falcon species. Main Program, Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Dwight Cooley, Refuge Manager at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge near Decatur, Alabama will tell us about this 35,000 acre gem just a couple of hours away from us. Every winter Wheeler refuge provides important wintering habitat for thousands of wintering waterfowl as well as a variety of raptors, sparrows and other bird species. Dwight has graciously agreed to speak to our club just a few days before the leading the club on a field trip on the Wheeler refuge. This field trip will be also be offered to members from across the state of Tennessee who participate in the TOS Winter meeting which will be held in Decatur, AL the weekend of January 12, 13 and 14. Come enjoy this preview before spending the weekend at the Winter meeting. Our group meets the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at Ascension Lutheran Church, 720 S. Germantown Rd (Just South of I-24 in East Ridge) (The Tennessee Ornithological Society boasts a 90 year history of bird study in TN and offers regular field trips and programs focused on wild birds. Our organization also participates in a variety of bird research projects, bird counts and conservation projects. We welcome visitors and new members of all levels of expertise. For more information call: Dave Vogt at 423/877-8129 or dfv@xxxxxxxxxx) Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Field Trip Saturday, January 13 Leader Dave Vogt Meet at the Food Lion (not the Bi Lo) at the Browns Ferry exit on I-24 just north of town at 7:30 am. Bring a lunch, snack, shoes suitable for mud, a scope (optional) and a full tank of gas. We will carpool to the Wheeler National Wildlife refuge where we will meet Refuge Manager, Dwight Cooley who will lead our caravan in to some closed areas of the refuge where we will look for water fowl, raptors, shorebirds etc.. This will be an all day trip so be prepared to get back late in the afternoon or early evening.
