CAMPING AT TOS SHADY VALLEY FORAY, NIGHTS OF 10 AND 11 JUNE 2011

-- TNC Orchard Bog Free Camping area at TOS Foray Headquarters.

-- Cherokee National Forest Backbone Rock Recreation Area campground CLOSED
due to maintenance.

-- Cherokee National Forest nearby Jacobs Creek Recreation Area campground
open and available.

TNC ORCHARD BOG -- Free camping will be provided at The Nature Conservancy's
Orchard Bog on Orchard Road in Shady Valley. Located on Orchard Rd. 1.5 miles
south of US 421. They have a large grassy area there, just off the paved
roadway. The house has been remodeled by The Nature Conservancy and has a
clean, modern, restroom inside which we will allow campers to have available
throughout the nights. It will be open to all foray participants during the
regular foray hours. We only have one bathroom (men and women). There are
electric lights inside so you don't have to hunt your way around in the dark.
It is a heated building (if that would be needed). Porch light on during the
night. The camping area at Orchard Bog only has a restroom and no bathroom
(otherwise -- no shower or tub) but there is a sink. So we have no way to
provide a bath for anyone in Shady Valley :-)

Foray participants may sleep in your vehicle, pitch a tent, use a popup camper
or bring a self-contained larger unit -- whatever. The camping area is in the
very large, grassy yard of our TOS Foray Headquarters building. Rick Knight
will tent camp there both Friday and Saturday nights. We have many outlets
inside where campers can charge cell phones. No internet service is available
but two cell towers provide good access and smart phone availability to the
internet. Knight, Wallace Coffey, Roy Knispel and a manager of The Nature
Conservancy will have cell phones in the field and ground line phones at their
nearby homes in case you need assistance during the night. We will provide
bottles of water, in addition to what you bring for yourself. The water at
this facility has not been tested and should no be used for drinking or
cooking. Parking is all off-road on TNC property, adjacent to your camp, and
in a lighted area.

Field parties and coordination will be conducted at this site early each
morning. We have the ability to lock the building as needed and when we are
all ways. All foray leaders have keys to the door.

JACOBS CREEK RECREATION AREA OF THE CHEROKEE NATIONAL FOREST (CAMPGROUND)
Address: 300 Jacobs Creek Rd., Bristol, TN 37620. Managed by Watauga Ranger
District -- 4400 Unicoi Drive, Unicoi, TN 37692 Phone 423-735-1500 Monday --
Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

It is located 10 miles and 25 minutes away, just off US 421 (South) and along
the shoreline of the beautiful and mountainous TVA South Holston Lake. The
mileage and time listed here is from the front door of the TOS Foray
Headquarters to the sign-in station at the campground.

You drive across the mountain from Shady Valley in Johnson County to the
campground at the bottom of the mountain in Sullivan County, TN.

IT IS A FEE AREA -- $12 daily fee (up to 5 persons and 2 cars). Golden Age
Pass Port $6. Fees must be paid and left in envelope in fee station by 2 p.m.
each day. Campground host on duty at campsite adjacent to sign-in station.
Gates locked at 10 p.m. and not opened until 7 a.m. Since a clear statement
appears at the sign-in station bulletin board that you may leave a car outside
the gate at night at your own risk, it clearly suggests no exceptions.

This recreation area has 29 campsites (one is flooded due to high water in the
reservoir and that provides only 28). Clean and adequate men's and women's
separate bathrooms but we are not aware of any showers or bath facilities.
Swimming on your own in TVA lake designated swimming area which has no
lifeguard on duty. Picnic sites, fireplaces and grills provided. Pets
permitted on leash.
