The Bristol TN-VA Christmas Bird Count found 83 species on Sunday, Dec. 30,
2007, which is
normal compared to the most recent 10-year-average of 82.9 species. The most
recent
20-year-average is 77.8 species. The count's record is 91 in 2004 which is the
region record high count.
Thirty birders in six parties may represent a new record turnout.
The Bristol CBC was first held in 1931.

The party high count was 59 species under the leadership of Rick Knight and
included Roy Kinspel, Joe McGuiness and Kim Stroud.

Richard Lewis compiled the count for his 27th consecutive year dating back to
1981.
Wallace Coffey participated in his 49th consecutive Bristol CBC.

Among the more interesting species were Kinght's party finding three Eared
Grebes at Musick's
Campground on S.H. Lake. This is the 10th Bristol CBC which has recorded this
species. In
addition, Rack Cross' party had three Snow Geese (two white morphs and one blue
morph) at
Clear Creek Lake along with a single Ross's Goose. There is one previous
record of the
Ross's for the count when one bird was found there in 2005. Cross' party also
had two
Black-crowned Night-Herons there, making the sixth year they have been found on
the count.
Larry McDaniel's party had the count's fourth Snow Goose. Richard Lewis and
Phillip Lewis
found an American Woodcock and a Northern Bobwhite. The last report of either
species
on this count was in 1998.

No new count species were reported this year. Seven species were
recorded in record high numbers: Wild Turkey (68), Great Blue Heron (34),
Cooper's Hawk (9),
Northern Flicker (50), Carolina Chickadee (174), Brown Creeper (8) and Northern
Cardinal (292).

No significant influx of northern finches were found.

Despite efforts by the USDA. to trap and kill Canada Geese in the count area,
a near record 859 birds were found. Almost 10 percent of the total was 81
birds at Middlebrook Lake.
Federal agents conducted an extensive effort to kill and relocated geese from
Middlebrook this
past summer.

Large roosts of Ring-billed Gulls at South Holston Lake and at Middlebrook Lake
near the Bristol Virginia Regional Landfill accounted for the 840 gulls.

Four species of "count week" (cw) birds are reported in the list below but are
not included in
the total of 83 species.
