May 2, 2004 Cherokee Ntl Forest Roan Mt, TN I spent the day hiking the Appalachian Trail from Carver's Gap east to Yellow Mtn Gap then out Sugar Cove to Sugar Cove Rd. The highlights while driving up rt 143 to Carver's Gap were singing LEAST FLYCATCHERS and VEERY. ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAKS were numerous; no sign of Acadian Flycatchers, and no Alder Flycatchers at the gap. CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS were in good numbers, some at the gap but many more along the ridge. Other warblers included YELLOWTHROAT, CANADA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACKBURNIAN, REDSTART, YELLOW-RUMPED, YELLOW, and the best of the day--BREWSTER'S WARBLER. It was a male singing zee-zaa-zaa-zaa on the left about 100 yds inside the Ntl Forest boundary at the end of Sugar Cove Rd. There are a couple of farm gates you must pass to get to the boundary, just to the left of a pond that sports the yellow warbler. The Brewster's was up an unmaintained trail around the border of an old field or home-site strewn with young blackberry brambles. The plumage was just like Sibley's male 1st backcross, an absolute delight to see. Good Birding!
