Nov 10, 2008 ~4:00pm
Montgomery Cty, TN
Fort Campbell

Yesterday I observed 6 blackbirds from a distance, with pale eyes and without
the wedge-shaped Grackle tail, sitting in a tree in an open field. The lighting
was not great so I moved in closer and the birds flew down into a lightly
disked field where I was able to get much better looks. I was able to see the
contrasting greenish back and purplish head of 3 males and 3 dark-eyed females.
These were the best looks I've had of Brewer's in the East. They were the first
documented on Fort Campbell as well.

Other bird highlights from yesterday:
Northern harrier - 2, female
Merlin - 1, female
Horned lark - 2
American pipit - 8 FOS

I also checked out the fields where Short-eared owls are usually seen, but none
detected between 4:45 - 5:00pm.

I was originally out looking for Rusty blackbirds since I had seen my first of
seasons (FOS) in Chattanooga on Sunday. Many thanks to Clyde Blum for leading
the Standifer Gap Marsh field trip on Sunday during the Fall TOS meeting and to
the Chattanooga TOS for hosting such a wonderful meeting. It's always great to
see birding friends!
