March 11, 2006 Greene County-- Joachime Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management Area (JBR); Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC); many back roads in the western part of the county, as well as a few spots near Tusculum and Greeneville I spent about three and a half hours birding this afternoon and evening after work. Results were good-- Canada Goose (25); Gadwall (10 WMDC); American Wigeon (5 at intersection of Toby Road and Smelser Road); American Black Duck (2 WMDC); Mallard (26); Green-winged Teal (5 WMDC); Great Blue Heron (3); Northern Harrier (4); Red-tailed Hawk (4); American Kestrel (5); Wilson's Snipe (28); American Woodcock (at intersection of Holly Creek Road and Brown's Bridge Road, in Tusculum); Eurasian Collared-Dove (3 adjacent to West Greene High School); Short-eared Owl (JBR; observed in flight and perched, from 5:07 until 5:31; the bird was also observed at JBR on March 8 by Orland and Phine Britton); Eastern Phoebe (4); Purple Martin (4 at intersection of Highway 348 and Gravel Woods Road); Tree Swallow (JBR); American Pipit (4 JBR); Rusty Blackbird (6 on Green Road); Brewer's Blackbird (12+ along Highway 340 0.2 mile west of Turner Lane; this has been a reliable spot for BRBL for several years); Purple Finch (Greeneville).
