TN birders, After examining pictures of the 5 swans provided by Dick Schier of Chattanooga, I have to eat some humble pie and say they closely resemble the head/face of mute swans. Sorry for the false alarm to the listserv.? Guess I was trying to get out of the cold too quickly. David -----Original Message----- From: davchaffin@xxxxxxx To: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tue, 3 Feb 2009 9:30 pm Subject: [TN-Bird] Bradley Co Tundra Swans TN birders, Following a call from one of our local optometrists this evening, I confirmed that he had 5 tundra swans on his pond.? From the report from his daughter, they were present when she got home from early dismissal from Cleveland schools yesterday at 12:30.? There is one adult and 4 immature birds.? Directions are as follows:? Take Highway 60 west from exit 25 on I-40, cross the bridge at Candies Creek, and turn right at the Super Saver onto Old Georgetown Street.? This should be about 1-1.5 miles from the interstate.? Following the first right turn off Georgetown Road(Hwy 60), take the next left turn onto Old Georgetown Trail.? After a short straightaway, the road takes a 90 degree turn to the right, at which point you will turn left onto a gravel driveway.? In about 150 feet, turn left onto a second driveway.? The pond can be sen from the? paved driveway.? I used the corner of the house as a partial blind, but he birds did not seem to be skittish.? This was a new Bradley Co spe cies for me.? Scope views allowed good visualization of the facial skin, bill, and eye complex to confirm the tundra vs trumpeter swan. Will try to get another email tonight? on other birds seen today.
