SUN 13 FEB 2011 Boone Dam Overlook, Washington Co., TN D. Holt I started out today searching through Ring-billed Gulls at S. Holston Lake hoping for any other gull species, but no luck. I stopped for a quick look at Boone Dam Overlook, but I didn't see any birds at all on arrival, until I noticed one lone bird on the spit of land near the swimming area, where the gulls usually sit en masse. With binoculars I could see that it was a Peregrine Falcon. I wondered if it was standing on a prey item, or injured, to stand there so long. Then it skipped down to the water's edge and began to bathe! In a few minutes it returned to the spit, fluffed, and stood in the sun facing the wind for a couple of minutes, fluffed again, and flew off upriver. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Other birds I found of interest today were a Blue-winged Teal at the S. Holston Weir Dams, and a Kildeer on Powerline Rd., both in Sullivan Co.
