Yesterday (May 25) I heard a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER singing at
a site in Roane County in the Ridge and Valley of Tennessee. While this
species is a fairly common breeder at all elevations on the Cumberland
Plateau and in the Appalachians of TN, it has rarely been recorded
breeding in the lands the lie between them--the Ridge and Valley--(Does
anyone know of records?), according to Nicholson's Atlas of the Breeding
Birds of Tenn.
While the same species was noted singing in this location a month
ago, it was presumed to be in migration. This late in the season, a
singing male is more likely mated or still looking for one. The
location is along East Fork Poplar Creek on the Oak Ridge Dept. of
Energy Reservation (adjacent to the North Boundary Trail) at about 250 m
elevation.
On this same beautiful spring day, a pair of LOUSIANA WATERTHRUSHES
chinked loudly at me near a bridge over Bear Creek on the same trail.
In contrast, it seemed that numbers of some usually present species were
down along the
lower 2 miles of the trail--particularly Kentucky Warblers (only 1),
Hooded Warblers (0), Prothonotary Warblers (0), Blue-winged Warblers
(0), and Northern Bob-whites (0).
