Hi folks,

In Blount County, just down Flats Road from the Foothills Parkway, is
a place Tracey and I call the "finch spot." For 3 Christmas Bird
Counts in a row, I/we have had Pine Siskins and/or Red Crossbills
there. I believe it was 2 years ago we had about 120+ Red
Crossbills! The birds tend to stick around a very small area,
virtually on the road. We park our car and just look at them from 15
feet away.

I went by about 2:45 pm today, 11/4. There were about 35 Pine
Siskins there. There was also a flock of about 20 Cedar Waxwings in
the pines down the road.

To get there: Follow the Foothills Parkway south from US 321. Take
a left turn about 9(?) miles up. The turn is marked Flats Road and
Look Roack Campground. Before the campground, take a right, then at
the t take another right onto road (it really looks like a
driveway)on the left About 2 houses past here, park in the driveway
of the house/trailer that is under construction, and look around. If
you get to Eagle Rock (a religious camp, I think) you've gone too
far.

Or, you can just take Montvale Road from the center of town. Drive
all the way south past camp Montvale, and take a left on Flats Road.
Go about a mile.

Charlie
