May 29, 2002 Today, I returned from my trip with Steve McConnell to the Big Bend area of Texas to two surprise birds. As my daughter in-law pulled up to let me out, I was greeted by a Black-billed Cuckoo calling away over my head. When I rush to grab my glasses out of my bag, she just shook her head and drove away. It was a first for my yard and a heck of a way to be greeted back. The bird called all afternoon. Another surprise awaited inside as the phone rang and my nephew was calling from his boat out on Snow Lake Shores, a small lake in Benton Co. north Mississippi. It seems he had a fishing partner plunge diving near his boat. The Brown Pelican was evidently catching more than he was but it was an exciting first for Jim. Anyhow keep your eyes open here in TN for this brown bomber. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
