Today we (My mom and I and David Hollie) went up Signal Mt. to try for the Broad-tailed Hummingbird, but with no luck. Dan Williams suspected that it had left, since he hadn't seen it yesterday afternoon or today. From Signal Mt. we headed to Elora to try for the Black-throated Sparrow. On the way we saw Cooper's and Red-tailed Hawks, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Turkey Vulture, and several Loggerhead Shrikes. When we got to the Dennison Farm, just after passing the house, we scanned the fields on the left just before the parking area, and found 2 or 3 Lapland Longspurs and 30+ American Pipits. We then went on to the area where the Black-throated Sparrow has been spotted. We searched for a little while before my mom saw it for a split second, she waved us over, but we got there too late. After about 15 minutes of searching, it finally popped up for some nice long views. It was seen about 11:30 AM. The Black-throated Sparrow and Lapland Longspur were lifers for all of us. After a few minutes of watching the sparrow, we headed over to Winchester and found the 4 Whooping Cranes with 15 Sandhill Cranes. On the same pond, there was 1 Northern Shoveler, 15 American Wigeons, and 20+ Mallards. On the way back home, we stopped by Nickajack Lake and found 1 Common Loon, 5 DC Cormorants, 75+ Coots, 15+ Ring-necked Ducks, 1 Bufflehead male, and 10+ Pied-billed Grebes. We had a total of 59 species today. Zack Barrow Bradley Co.
