May 26, 2009 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN A noon time trip to the "Pits" paid off again. I found 2 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and saw them copulating. They moved to another area and were joined by another pair. They all eventually left, flying to McKellar Lake. Looks like we are going to have nesting somewhere in the area. I took a bunch of photos during the 2 hour encounter. Photos, including head shots allowing the 4 birds to be told apart can be viewed starting at: _http://www.pbase.com/ol_coot/image/113092757_ (http://www.pbase.com/ol_coot/image/113092757) The male Northern Shoveler is keeping the single female all to himself, not allowing the other male anywhere near her. As I've seen them already mating, I would think she may be laying eggs nearby. At least 4 pair of Blue-winged Teal have the possible nests as now just males can be found. A Caspian Tern rested at TVA Lake while 4 Least Terns fed.......... Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
