7-22-09 Cross Creeks Wildlife Refuge (Dover/Stewart Co.) A pleasantly cloudy afternoon in search of shorebirds, etc. revealed the following: 1. A Black Tern frolicking over a mudflat with at least 3 species of swallows- Northern Rough-wing, Barn, and Cliff 2. Several shorebirds with the following species well represented - Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, Least Sandpipers, Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers 3. Great Blue Herons, a Green Heron, Double Crested Cormorants and Great Egrets 4. 30-40 Goldfinches and several Eastern Bluebirds surrounding a majestically perched Red-Shouldered Hawk 5. Fields full of Red-winged Blackbirds, Indigo Buntings, American Crows, Killdeer and Common Yellowthroats 6. Singles including Wood Duck, Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Eastern Kingbird, Eastern Phoebe, Pileated Woodpecker, and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo heard in the distance Steve Routledge Clarksville, Montgomery Co.
