December 9, 2010 I had to drive on Interstate 40 from Nashville to Crossville and back today for work. The highlight of the drive was seeing four small flocks of Sandhill Cranes flying high overhead just west of Crossville, TN (Cumberland County) around mile marker 311. The first three groups each had about 8-10 individuals, and the fourth group had about 20. This was at 9:45 AM and they were heading south. On the drive back, I saw 10+ buteos perched in trees along the interstate. I'm sure most were Red-Tail Hawks but ID is tough at 70 mph. I also noticed 4-5 American Kestrels perched on wires along some of the farm fields.
