Seven intrepid birders set out on a warm early morn today to contribute to a census of the birds of Bells Bend. They were: Hazel Cassel, Barbara Harris, Joe Ingle, Tony Lance, Ed Schreiber (with telescopic camera), Jan Shaw, and myself. Our better finds included Henslow's Sparrow (telescopic photo confirmed), Lincoln's Sparrow (ditto), Grasshopper Sparrow, Dickcissel, and Blue Grosbeak. Others, in varying numbers, were these: * Black Vulture * Turkey Vulture * Broad-winged Hawk * Northern Bobwhite * Killdeer * Mourning Dove * Chimney Swift * Belted Kingfisher * Red-bellied Woodpecker * Eastern Phoebe * Eastern Kingbird * Blue Jay * America Crow * White-eyed Vireo * Yellow-throated Vireo * Cedar Waxwing * Eastern Bluebird * Northern Mockingbird * Brown Thrasher * Carolina Wren * Barn Swallow * Northern Rough-winged Swallow * Bard Swallow * Carolina Chickadee * Tufted Titmouse * American Goldfinch * House Finch * Yellow Warbler * Yellow-rumped Warbler * Prairie Warbler * Palm Warbler * Common Yellowthroat * Hooded Warbler * Yellow-breasted Chat * Swamp Sparrow * White-crowned Sparrow * White-throated Sparrow * Savannah Sparrow * Field Sparrow * Eastern Towhee * Rose-breasted Grosbeak * Indigo Bunting * Orchard Oriole * Red-winged Blackbird * Eastern Meadowlark * Common Grackle It is obvious from this list that Bells Bend is a haven for sparrows and other finches, one of the few left in Middle Tennessee. The thought that the Maytown project will again be proposed to the Metro Planning Commission should bestir us to action on behalf of the preservation of this unique parkland. Ed Gleaves Edwin S.
