Bells Bend -- Old Hickory Blvd
Davidson Co., TN
2017 Aug. 31
My first day of retirement, so I was out birding of course and
eventually came across a nice reward.
This Thursday morning I headed to Snow Bunting Peninsula on Old
Hickory Lake to see if any Hurricane Harvey associated birds might
drop in or perhaps the peninsula would be graced with a brief stop
from some shore birds. The overnight rain band had moved north by
the time I arrived, and Phillip Casteel and Mike Smith were
leaving having been unsuccessful earlier in a similar quest.
I headed for the Bells Bend sod farm area to look for shore birds
there but found only Killdeer. As I was leaving, perhaps 200-300
yards up the road from the main sod farm field, there were several
birds on the electric wires next to the road, and I stopped to take
a quick look. While 3 were just MOURNING DOVEs, one to my surprise
was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. Not the usual dead snag that I have
found them on in the past. It stayed perched for several minutes
before flying to the trees across the road.
