Quite the adventure for me to get to Bells Bend this afternoon, but when I
arrived at 4:15 pm, Jackie Corbin was standing in the road pointing into the
fenceline where the Harris's Sparrow and 1 White-Crowned Sparrow were sitting.
This was about 1.5 miles past the main Bells Bend parking area, between some
hay bales on the right and a yellow fire plug on the left, before and in sight
of the silo just down the road mentioned in other reports.
My plan was to get there at 3pm, but upon leaving work my power steering was
out along with a battery message, and then on Briley Parkway the car
immediately overheated. I pulled over and checked under the hood, and my main
belt was loose and off all the rollers. I was able to drive it off Briley at
County Hospital Road and call for a towtruck to the get the car, and a friend
to pick me up and take me home. We decided to stop by Bells Bend anyway since
I brought my camera, and from the sparrow spot Jackie agreed to take me home,
and of course Vietnam Veterans Blvd had an accident on it and was down to one
lane. All this made for an interesting afternoon, and ABA bird 493 for the
year, still well over 300 behind the Stoll brothers. Although not a state bird
for me, it was a nice addition to my Davidson County list.
