9/16/09 Henry Co (Paris Landing area) Nothing much to report, but an abbreviated trip to KY Lake on Wednesday did produce my 1st Lesser Black-backed Gull of the season; right on time. My earliest record is on 9/4 and my high count of 4 birds (at the same location) was on 10/9; these birds show up quite early. This Lesser Black-backed, which looked to be a 3rd-cycle though I didn't have good looks, was on the island out from the bridge. This bird looked pretty dark for a 'graelsii', but this is definitely tricky, and unusually for the location at this time of year, there wasn't a Laughing Gull nearby to get a good color comparison. Also on the island among the horde of Ring-billed Gulls were several Herring Gulls including a couple of juveniles. Once Common Tern was among the Caspian and Forster's Terns as well. If interested, I've placed a distant photo of the Lesser Black-backed, as well as of a young Cooper's Hawk in the midst of a stare-down with a Mourning Dove.
