June 13, 2010 Beaman Park Davidson County I had a nice hike along the creek trail in Beaman Park this morning (7:30 - 9:30 am) before the heat of the day kicked in. It was actually quite comfortable until I climbed higher on the ridge. The WORM-EATING WARBLERS that were plentiful 2-3 weeks ago were not singing much today, but I did see one near the start of the trail near the lower parking lot off Lower Marrowbone Rd. I only heard one other one as the trail makes it's way up the ridge. I heard 2-3 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES singing along the creek, and there were plenty of ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS and WOOD THRUSHES singing. At one point along the creek, just before the junction with the trail up to the Nature Center, I came upon a small mobbing action of birds including CAROLINA CHICKADEES (3), TITMICE (2), an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, and a RED-EYED VIREO. I'm not sure what had them so agitated. As I watched them, I noticed some movement in some lower bushes and saw a pair of OVENBIRDS. I was able to watch them for about five minutes before they decided they had enough of the excitement. I heard two more OVENBIRDS singing as I made my way up the ridge, and also heard SCARLET TANAGER, SUMMER TANAGER, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, PILEATED WOODPECKER, and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
