Yesterday two young Bald Eagles were brought to the Mid-South Raptor Center after being found in a downed nest in Obion County in the Reelfoot Lake/Samburg area. The nest was an old one having been used for at least the past fifteen years and probably longer. A strong tornado came through the area about three weeks ago and blew down the nest. The birds had been on the ground for that long but were only recently discovered. Both birds were somewhat thin but had probably been fed by the parents for at least part of the time they were down. While still young they were actually quite close to fledging. Unfortunately one bird broke a wing in the fall and had a maggot infested wound. The wound was cleaned and dressed by Dr. David Haggard and will be rechecked on Sunday. The second bird (X-rays showed it to be a male) was in much better condition with no injuries found. While release of the injured bird is doubtful due to the extent of the damage to the broken wing, the second bird should be released in the Reelfoot Lake area once it is old enough for release.
