Aug. 22, 2004 Mud Island - Ensley bottoms Shelby Co. TN The migration evident yesterday took its toll on some species but increased others. The male Avocet was still hanging with the ducks and the immature Wilson's Phalarope number doubled as a very young male took up foraging in a different pool from where the Saturday bird still hunts. The numbers of Semipalmated, Western and Pectoral Sandpipers were down. The Semipalmated Plovers were down to just two adult birds and the Lesser Yellowlegs and Stilt Sandpiper numbers were cut in half. The numbers of Least Sandpipers took a big leap up but the immature birds still lag and again no Pectoral immatures could be found in the hundreds present. There was a movement of accipiters going south as 3 high flying immature Cooper's and a small adult male Sharpie were pointed out to me as they passed overhead. The immature Cooper's that has taken up hunting the fields still excites the birds when it crosses the flats. On Mud Island I added a single breeding plumaged Black-bellied Plover to the weekend Wind Bird list plus 3 Caspian Terns, 5 Forster's and 47 Least Terns. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
