Hi TN birders.
Richard and I rode around the Old Hickory Dam Park this morning. The numbers
of birds were down. There were lots of American Coots, Ring-billed Gulls,
Mallards, and Pied Grebes. There were only two Great Blue Herons, and I only
saw two Horned Grebes. There were only four Canada Geese, all on the point
at the end of Burnett Road. We usually see deer on the Dupont property, but
today we saw none. Then on around to Cinder Road, we saw a Kestrel at the
first farm house, and in the field north of the road a pair of Red Tails
sharing a tree at the back of the same field. In the bushes just past the
house, we finally saw a White?crowned sparrow, only one, but he was in a
flock of other sparrows that flew down and stayed down after a car came by
on the same side of road. We thought to catch them on the way back, but
didn?t, possibly because of the heavy rain that had begun. Close to the
shore near the dam were numerous Pied-billed Grebes. Then next to the road
toward the boat ramp, we saw lots of Song, and White-throated sparrows, and
one, possibly two Fox Sparrows. The Black Vultures were there, but few in
number. On the way out where Cinder Road meets Swinging Bridge Road there in
the fence row were a large number of White-throated and Field Sparrows, also
a couple of Songs and one more Fox sparrow.

I was excited to see the first White-crowned Sparrow this winter.

Tarcila Fox, Goodlettsville, TN.
