Washington County, TN
Austin Springs area
The Anhinga (female/immature) that Cathy and I spotted this evening (from
Herb Hodge Road) was located directly across the Watauga River arm of Boone
Lake. It was perched in a tree along the lake edge. Roy Knispel arrived
just in time to see the bird before it flew behind the trees and out of
sight. Chances are good that it will still be in the area tomorrow. It
flew down into the "pond area" of Austin Springs (Humphrey's property).
Cathy spoke with Vernon Humphrey's daughter and she said Vernon had noticed
"some very different birds down there" this past week.
The habitat along Herb Hodge Road looks absolutely awesome. I would
imagine the habitat in the Humphrey's property is equally incredible. It
is so nice to see the Boone Lake water levels back to "normal".
Other notable birds:
Great Egret (14)
Little Blue Heron (8) - all immature
We also spotted four River Otters playing around underneath the Austin
Cathryn L. McNeil
Thomas S. McNeil
