As a follow-up to David's post on the albatross, I was searching for news from tsunami effects on the NW Hawaiian islands during lunch. Several reports online, a few links below. 'Wisdom' and her chick (the bird from David's post) were on higher ground and survived as did the Short-tailed Albatross chick (first nesting for Hawai'i) but many birds were lost ... either swept out to sea or buried in their burrows. Laysan Island was hit hard and much of the island washed over. The research crew there rode out the tsunami in the hurricane shelter but their camp was damaged and they have been evacuated. Too early to know the fate of the Laysan Finches, but they have survived much including rabbits eating all vegetation from the island. http://birdsredesign.wordpress.com/2011/03/14/tsunami-displaces-thousands-of-albatross-chicks/ http://peteatmidway.blogspot.com/ http://noaacred.blogspot.com/2011/03/reports-from-laysan-island.html Dean Edwards Knoxville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
