I saw my first (life) American bittern yesterday (4/23) at Fort Campbell
(Stewart Co.) while surveying for new point count locations. It flushed out of
a wet drain at the end of an old dirt landing strip. I immediately saw the dark
patches on top of the wings as it flew directly away from me. Then I saw the
striped breast and a black mark on the side of it's head as it turned and flew
to the left. It's great to finally get those elusive birds!
