This morning at 6:10 am I woke up to a peent call coming from outside. I raced
to my back deck and listened and watched as two American Woodcocks made their
nasal peent calls as well as performed their flight displays. Always an
interesting sight no matter how many times you see it. By 6:38 am it was all
over. This is the first I have seen/heard any this year.
I did monitor the yard the last few evenings but did not see or hear any
Woodcocks. However, I have had a Red-Shouldered Hawk perched in my yard three
days straight between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm overlooking the area where the
Woodcocks were this morning. I also saw my first coyote in the same vicinity at
6:15pm last night. It makes me wonder if they may have been targeting them,
but it could just be coincidence as there is quite a bit of other prey.
On a side note regarding habitat, my yard has many trees but I back up to an
open wet meadow. The wet meadow is bordered by creeks on two sides and then a
forested area on the other side of the creek. This is my first year in a new
house so not sure if the American Woodcocks come here every year.
