Radnor Lake
Davidson Co.
This morning I birded Radnor Lake between and after the thunderstorms.
Migrants were few, but I had a few neat observations. When I got to the area
just
before the Artist and Teacher bench on the Lake Trail, I heard a CONNECTICUT
WARBLER singing loudly. But the bird just kept singing, one song after another
with no prompting by me. In a five minute period at 9:15 I estimated that it
sang 15-20 times! This was during a light drizzle. It was in very dense,
tall vegetation, so I only got a glimpse of it once. On my way back from Long
Bridge 30 minutes later it was singing again about 30 yards east of where it
had been. This time I counted, and it sang 16 times in a five minute period.
At Radnor during migration we sometimes hear these birds, but usually it's one
song in about 30 minutes. Don't know what got into this guy.

In the same area, Ed Conrad had a MOURNING WARBLER there on Sunday, May 13.
And today there was a pair of KENTUCKY WARBLERS, one carrying nesting
material. I also had another MOURNING WARBLER near the ranger's house on
Sunday.

One RING-BILLED GULL flew around the lake today and landed on the water. I
think this is the first time I've seen one there. Also, a female WOOD DUCK
with 12 young in tow.

But still NO YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS! I've been birding about everyday for
weeks and have yet to even hear one.
