May 17, 2009 I was surprised and delighted this evening to find an Alder Flycatcher in Greeneville. The bird was present at 7:20 behind the Kwik Shop Market located at the intersection of East Church Street and Bernard Avenue. The site is a heavily vegetated small stream that joins the main body of Richland Creek less than a half mile away. The vegetation along the tributary is a mixture of shrubs, deciduous saplings, grasses, and forbs, with the whole mass being practically impenetrable. I heard the bird vocalize quite a few times from a distance of 20-30 feet. It gave its distinctive "pip" call at least eight times, and I also heard two full songs and a partial song. Having studied nesting Alder Flycatchers at Carver's Gap on Roan Mountain each year for the last decade, I am very familiar with the vocalizations. As far as I am aware, this is a first record for Alder Flycatcher in Greene County.
