On the home front (Jacksboro, TN-Campbell County) I still have Purple Finches at the feeders , and the Bluebirds are expecting 4 youngins. I have also had some interesting interaction between the Bluebirds and Chickadees. The Chickadees are STILL insisting on entering this particular Bluebird box despite having other boxes available. On Saturday, I observed a Chickadee drop something from the box that looked like a fecal sack. I went out to investigate, and it was a broken Bluebird egg!! I cannot believe a Chickadee was this aggressive or broke an egg and then removed it from the nest, but there was the evidence. I marvel at how he got the egg up out of the nest cavity etc.. with the weight of the egg. Did the Chickadee break the egg first? ( It looked like it in the nest box.) OR did it just remove an egg that was already broken by something else? Strange. Will be interesting to watch this saga. Today, the Bluebirds had 4 eggs once again, as she was just in the process the past few days of beginning laying. Anyone ever heard of such Chickadee behavior?
