Greetings All, Unless someone actually witnessed woodpeckers caching acorns in this relay station, I would bet it was some species of Corvid (most likely a jay) that did this. Here in Oregon, it is a rite of late fall to watch Western Scrub-Jays flying back and forth between filbert orchards, or stands of oaks, and their storage site. I've talked to people who have torn down old sheds or barns only to find huge caches of these nuts, sometimes hundreds of pounds.. Conversely, I've never seen woodpeckers engage in this type of activity. Our resident Acorn Woodpeckers store nuts, but they typically create a "granary" in an dead limb or a utility pole by excavating hundreds of acorn-sized holes and placing an acorn in each one. Some granaries are used for decades.
