Had to be at work early today but did get one great bird and one good one in the backyard before leaving. This is on Black Oak Ridge in west Knox Co, Monday, 27 Oct 2008. First the good bird, an EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE which resets the late date for the yard which had already been broken on 18 Oct. Now the great bird. I heard a chip note coming from the Butterfly Bush which sounded somwhat like a "Myrtle" Warbler but was a bit off. That got my attention and finally the bird hopped out from the thickest part of the bush and gave a nice full view confirming an AUDUBON'S Yellow-rumped Warbler. It stayed in the Butterfly Bush for about a minute before flying back to the woods. I was able to get on it with the binoculars again breifly before it went further back, still chipping but not seen. ID points: The throat was buffy but not the bright yellow of a spring adult, so probably a first-winter bird. More importantly, the shape of the throat patch was triangular in shape with straight sides which didn't extend back under the cheek as in Myrtle. The head was uniform in color without the darker auricular (cheek) patch of a Myrtle offset by the pale supercilium and extension of the throat patch. This bird had no sign what-so-ever of a pale supercilium but did have very distinctive, broken eyering forming arcs above and below the eye. Otherwise, typical Yellow-rumped warbler winter plumage. This is my 3rd "Audubon's" Warbler in East TN and actually the 2nd for the yard with the first being and adult male last spring. Hopefully it will hang around. Some other noteworthy sightings from yesterday (Sun, 26 Oct) were BLUE-HEADED VIREO (new late date for the yard), 17 Turkey Vultures heading south along the ridge, 1 Sharp-shinned and 2 Cooper's. A nice tally for late-Oct of 31 species on the day.
