[TN-Bird] Re: AOU Checklist correction - Scoter

I can understand the confusion. I wasn't sure what to make of it
when the Supplement said "ours" would be American Scoter and "theirs"
would be Black Scoter as that would be a name change imposed on the
European form (currently Common Scoter or just Scoter) which is out
of the AOU jurisdiction. Also, apparently M. americana also breeds
in Siberia so American Scoter is a bit of misnomer. And... the
proposal posted on the AOU website proposed retaining the name
Black Scoter for "our" bird.

HOWEVER,... before being lumped with M. nigra many, many years ago,
the M. americana WAS called American Scoter. It only became Black
Scoter when lumped as M. nigra americana based on the Latin species
name. Now that it is no longer considered part of M. nigra, does it
still make sense to call it Black Scoter? We may not have heard the
end of this yet.

At least it resolves one (actually two because of the wren split)
of the cases where the BOU and AOU have different common names for
the same species.

If you really want some entertainment, look up the proposal for the
Latin name-change on Blue-winged Warbler and follow the reasoning
behind that one.
