As we expected on a cold day, the birds were busy. The pileated showed up at the suet an hour early. The house and purple finches were up to their elbows on the flat feeder among some of the more than fifty goldfinch in the yard. All 27 usual species were here. The coopers hawk scattered everyone several times, only one goldfinch tried to flee via the windows and survived to tell the tale. The brown headed cowbird females consorted with the female redwing blackbirds with only a single male in the group. The male redwings formed a separate flock, both parties coming and going separately. A fine red tailed hawk searched the ground beneath several tree boughs, being sent on from each by the jays. There must have been 30 cardinals, many more white throated sparrows. The bluebirds returned after an absence to crowd into the nest box. Everyone fed until low light when a sudden high freezing wind sent everyone to shelter all at once. We need more feed tomorrow, so much was used.
