This came to me today, and I hope many of you will respond and try to do
what you can to make an impression on PetSmart about a bad situation. =20

<<< Dear Club Officers/Members,

=20

Yesterday, Sunday, November 27th, I was in PetSmart on Morrell Road. =
The
young African Grey they have on display to sell for $1299. came to their
store healthy and full feathered. The Grey has now chewed every feather =
it
can reach completely off. It has been tested and has no problem other =
than
severe stress and lack of one-on-one attention from a loving caretaker.

=20

I have been told by the Assistant Manager, James Smith, that the =
Director of
the Vet. Clinic in the store has offered to buy the bird at a reduced =
cost
in hopes of getting it released from PetSmart quickly to be =
rehabilitated
before it dies from the stress PetSmart has put it through. Mr. Smith =
tells
me that he too has offered to take the bird home and care for it =
properly.
I have now made the same offer.

=20

I then called the Manager of PetSmart. His name is Mark Michalowski. =
Mr.
Smith was good enough to dial his number for me as he is not allowed to =
give
the number out. =20

Mr. Michalowski was unhelpful and seemed not to understand that the Grey
cannot be rehabilitated right there in the store under the care of many
different employees, with customers and their dogs roaming around its =
cage,
etc., etc. His last word is that it is against PetSmart policy to =
release
the bird in this way. He did finally agree to allow Mr. Smith to take =
the
bird off the floor and place it in an isolation room. Mr. Michalowski =
only
did this to get me off the phone. He would not allow me to witness this
taking place or to view where the bird would be kept. However, Mr. =
Smith,
did allow me to see the room he put the bird in. It is a room next to =
the
Manager's office right next to the adoption kennel. =20

=20

With Mr. Smith's help, I then called the District Service Manager, Doug
Tooker. He is responsible for all of the PetSmart animals in Tennessee.
His cell phone number is=20

1-615-556-2262. I spoke to him at length and really got no where. He
insists the veterinarians that are treating the bird will inform him =
when he
needs to send the bird back to the breeder it came from to be =
rehabilitated.
He goes on and on about how much PetSmart cares for the well-being of =
this
bird, but his solution is to ship it off yet again. My guess is that =
this
will not be done. PetSmart will more than likely quietly euthanize this
bird.

=20

I don't really know what else to do so I am sending this note to the =
club
officers who have more experience in this sort of thing. It might be of
help to do a mass email to all club members giving them Mr. Tooker's =
cell
phone number. Some pressure may persuade him to move faster to help =
this
Grey. One more day in this store is too much.

=20

If you took the time to even read this, thank you. If you took the time =
to
call Mr. Tooker and/or go to PetSmart and demand to see the Grey, if it =
has
not been put back on the floor, bless you for trying. >>>
