While returning from Tim's Ford Lake this afternoon, my wife and I took a slight detour to look for American pipit and horned larks. Travelling out of Shelbyville towards Murphreesboro we took a right down Airport Rd. (aptly named) just past the Shelbyville Municipal Airport. Lots of savannah sparrows popped up on the barbed wire next to the road, but no signs of pipits or larks (other than lots of meadow larks). Then we spotted a female northern harrier flying low in the field, then flew across Airport Rd. towards the airport itself. As it went out of view, we spotted another female or juvenile sitting in the field eating a small mammal (vole?). We kept going up the road to find more harriers, all femal and juvenile. We watched as one bird on the ground was being hassled by another, but getting along more or less, seemed more playful than anything. It was here that we saw three more flying around as these two were both on the ground stationary, making the high count of the day right at five northern harrier, the most I've seen at one time in the State.
