At about 5PM on Saturday, I got a call from Tom Howe
about 5 Cackling Geese in Alcoa, Blount Co., TN. Jean
Alexander and David Johnson had also seen the geese
but none had gotten photos. I ran done but just missed
them as Tom had them fly off to the West just before
sunset. We tried several spots where the Canada Geese
gather but couldn't find any small ones. I returned
to the pond after dark and saw 24 Canada Geese on the
pond in the headlights along with the normal pond ducks
and coots.

Tom, Jean and David described small "Canada-like" geese
roughly Mallard-sized, with squared heads, very small
bills like a Ross's Goose and short necks.

Directions:

From I-40 in Knoxville, take the Alcoa Hwy (US 129) exit
south. As you approach McGhee-Tyson Airport there is a
Shoney's on your left. Turn here onto N Wright Rd.
Proceed through the 2 traffic lights to the stop sign
at the T with E Edison St. Turn right on Edison. The
pond is on your left, proceed to the next 4-way stop
and turn right where there's a parking area.

I plan to try again tomorrow afternoon.
