I joined Jeff Wilson this morning to bird the Big Sandy Unit of the TN NWR
starting at Paris Landing at 7AM. We had to wait until after 10 for the fog to
lift. We had 2 Common Goldeneyes and the resident Red-headed Woodpeckers
there. As we worked our way south to Big Eagle campground and Port Rd we
started seeing large numbers of Common Loons - our final estimate for the day
was 700+. Looking out the mouth of the creek we had distant views of a
Red-throated Loon and Jeff found a Pacific Loon. At our next stop (Trailer Rd)
Jeff made up for lost time finding all our target birds from one spot. From
the
beach their we had Surf Scoter, Black Scoter, Red-throated Loon, Pacific Loon
(I
never saw this bird), and a remarkably large loon with lighter face/head than
the Common Loons and an entirely light bill. Other field marks included
thicker
neck and more regular curve to back (peak not right behind neck) -
Yellow-billed
Loon. Also, while we were standing their we had a fly-by first winter Lesser
Black-backed Gull. As it was already mid-afternoon we headed around to Pace
Point and Rock Point for last light. From there we saw large numbers of loons
but never re-found the uncommon birds because of poor viewing conditions (heat
waves). Thanks to Jeff for pointing out some great birds.
