DEC. 14, 2007
MS River, TVA Lake,
Coro Lake and Robco Lake
Shelby, Co. TN

I snuck away yesterday for a quick scan of waterfowl after being grounded
for a while and was rewarded. At Dacus Bar on the river, no scoters but both
of
the adult Peregrine Falcons were sitting on their short perches watching the
water eating away at the sandbar. Their private hunting reserve will be
inundated this week.

At TVA Lake, in Ensley Bottoms, the Black Scoter was very active, flying
around a couple of times, while two new arrivals, immature Surf Scoters,
snoozed
away. A male Goldeneye has joined the female that has been present for a
couple of weeks and there has been an increase in both Canvasbacks and
Redheads
plus gobs of Greater Scaup.

It is proving to be a great year for Scoters. At Coro Lake, I was able to
photograph an immature White-winged Scoter and across the road at Robco Lake,
I
located, in the huge horde of divers, another Black Scoter plus a surprise,
an old friend, the leucistic Lesser Scaup has returned for the 4th year.

Good Birding !!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
