TN-Birders:
This is an update of the banding efforts (7-13 Sept) currently taking place at
Whigg Meadow in South Cherokee NF, Tellico Ranger District in Monroe County.
Most often netted species include Tennessee Warbler, Dark-eyed Junco,
Black-throated Blue Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo and Swainson's Thrush. Overall,
the mean number of daily captures appear to be lower than normal, but several
birds of interest/note have been banded.
Among the most interesting are 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls. Two HY individuals
(preformative molt) were netted using an audio-lure at 12:30 AM on 9 Sept;
banded and photographed. Additionally, a juvenile (in juv plumage) was netted
incidentally (without audio-lure) during the regular operating hours on 11 Sept
and was banded and photographed. All 3 individuals appear to be local birds
suggesting breeding occurred within the vicinity. Interestingly, NSWO were
heard calling periodically (both advertisement and whine calls) at night during
the span of 8 - 12 Sept.
Others species of interest banded include:
1 Sharp-shinned Hawk
1 Gray-cheeked Thrush
1 Black-capped Chickadee
2 Golden-winged Warblers
1 Wilson's Warbler
As of the morning of the 13th, no between-year returns have been netted. A
Merlin has been regular in the vicinity of the meadow. Dave Vogt will continue
to band daily through 22 Sept from the hours of 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Visitors
are welcome.
Good Birding,
Eric Soehren
