A number of us got nice looks at the Western Grebes that Joseph Mast found yesterday at Lake Tansi (about 4 miles south of Crossville in Cumberland County), though we could only find two birds. I went back out this morning (Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009) in the heavy drizzle and found that the two Western Grebes were still there. The best place to start looking is at the marina. It is on the south side of the lake, northwest of the dam. To reach it from Dunbar Rd. (Hwy. 282) go 0.3 miles south of where Dunbar Rd. crosses an arm of the lake, then turn right at the sign for the marina (Cherokee Trail). In about a mile there will be a right turn at another sign for the marina. (Although the signs at the marina say "POA members only", I've not heard of anyone ever having a problem). If you're in the area, it would be worthwhile checking nearby Lake Hiawatha. From where Dunbar Rd. crosses the arm of Lake Tansi, head north about 0.3 mile and turn (east) onto Cheyenne Dr. and follow the signs to Mitch's Restaurant (a couple of left turns and about 0.6 miles from Dunbar Rd.). New birds at Tansi (compared to yesterday afternoon) included 61 Redheads, 8 Lesser Scaup, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Black Ducks, and 2 Common Loons. There seemed to be fewer Horned Grebes today, but viewing conditions weren't ideal. Lake Hiawatha had an estimated 900 Ring-necked Ducks plus 3 Canvasbacks and several other duck species. Here is the ebird list from Tansi from yesterday that DJ Stanley compiled (excludes Lake Hiawatha): Location: Lake Tansi Observation date: 12/12/09 Number of species: 20 Canada Goose 13 Gadwall 3 American Wigeon 2 Mallard 4 Ring-necked Duck 4 Bufflehead 80 Common Goldeneye 1 Hooded Merganser 5 Ruddy Duck 120 Pied-billed Grebe 5 Horned Grebe 54 Western Grebe 2 Double-crested Cormorant 1 Bald Eagle 1 American Coot 700 Sandhill Crane 400 (overhead) Ring-billed Gull 12 Belted Kingfisher 1 American Crow 3 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Ed LeGrand Cumberland Co., TN ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen Stedman" <SStedman@xxxxxxxxxx> To: "Tennessee Birds" <tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, December 12, 2009 1:48 PM Subject: [TN-Bird] western grebes reported on lake tansi, cumberland county > DJ Stanley and Joseph Mast are reporting four Western Grebes on Lake > Tansi, Cumberland Co., TN, today.
