With the recent cold, snow, and most water frozen I decided to check Pace
Point in Henry County. There was 6” of snow on the road from Big Sandy all
the way out! An American Tree Sparrow feeding on Sage Grass along the
entrance was my first of the Winter. At Pace everything to the West was
frozen solid, with a lot of birds packed in out front. I counted 101 Common
Mergansers fairly close, with what had to be many more in the shimmer too
far to be sure! A close adult Red-throated Loon was nice as well. At
Bennett’s Creek two adult Golden Eagles sat side by side watching the ducks
feed in the snow-covered corn fields, where decent numbers of Lapland
Longspurs and Horned Larks fed alongside all the normally woodland birds
that were trying to avoid starvation.
